Session 1: Orientation!

Make It Better Summer: Session #1, 7/21/11

    Summary

How do you respond when your friends say, "that's so gay?" Do you know that gender has three parts or that, even if you are not transgender, you might have to confront transphobia? Have you ever dealt with the social expectation that because you're a boy, you should dress a certain way, or because you're a girl, you should behave a certain way?

If you've ever faced these issues or don't know how to respond to these questions, Max Philp and Irene Rojas-Carroll can help you out in this first Make It Better Summer session! Watch the full recording from the orientation session above, and make sure to tune in for the rest on Thursdays at 7 pm EST/ 4 pm PT. When you watch the sessions live, which will run through August 18th, you can ask questions and suggest answers!

Quick Recap: Key terms and points

LGBTQ = Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer

The three parts of gender identity:

    • Sex: Physical anatomy that we're born with
    • Gender Identity: Our inner sense of being a man, woman, both, or neither
    • Gender Expression: The way we present our gender. It's the outward intentional and unintentional ways we share our gender to other people through hair, clothes, behavior, etc.

Sexual Orientation: Our identity based on our gender and the gender or genders of those we're attracted to.

Gender Binary System: A social system requiring everyone to be raised as either a boy or girl, depending on the sex that they're assigned at birth.

Transphobia: The irrational fear of those who are perceived to break the gender binary.
